Recently I discovered Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). I know it’s been around for some time now, but it’s a new discovery for me and one I will take advantage of.

I have always wanted to publish a book, and lucky for me the other day, I stumbled upon a Tik-Tok video of how to publish low or no content books on KDP. Now you might ask what the heck is low or no content books? These are books that require minimal content within the actual manuscript. They tend to be more along the line of Journals, Diaries, Logs, Trackers, Short Poems, Adult & Children Coloring Books, notebooks, Short Children Books, Sketch Books, and the list goes on. I came across this information because I wanted to create a travel and tales journal for my blog to gift to people who follow me and support my work here on WordPress. After searching for ways to make a travel and tales journal, I unlocked another side of Amazon that I did not know existed, and within three days, I had drafted and submitted eight low-content books. I now have three cutie notebooks, three dream journals, one spell journal, plus the travel journal.

As someone who hopes to publish short stories one day, I think this is the perfect practice for me, especially when it comes to the features on KDP. It only took me a day to figure out the basics of making sure that book covers and content are accepted on the first submission. I now know if I do decide to publish that book of short stories, all I will have to worry about is the editing, layout, and aesthetics.

Why Publish Low-Content Books?

The first and most important thing is the fact that there is some money in low-content books. If you can create cutie notebooks, journals, guestbooks, calendars, or diaries that are eye-catching, you could see sales within days of releasing your book. You do not have to order copies of your book; Amazon will print all books and charge you a $2.00+ fee to print the books. For beginners, unless you have researched the market and know where there is a gap that needs to be filled, learns about keywords, and spend a great deal of time perfecting your interior pages, it can take some time to sell a book. It pays to practice, do the research, and actively try to create a few books per month, then eventually, they can turn into passive income. Perhaps you might only get a couple of hundred dollars a month for the first year you publish. Count that as money well-earned that could go towards paying your monthly or yearly fees for Adobe Acrobat Pro, the Pro version of Canva, Photoshop, and other editing tools. This publishing method isn’t a get-rich-quick game. It’s a slow process that takes dedication and a love for what you do.

How I made my Travel and Tales Journal 

I used a few tools when crafting my first eight content books. Below I have listed some very helpful YouTubers and sites that made it super easy for me to start.

1. Canva (Design cover pages + interior of book)
2. Adobe Acrobat Pro (KDP only accepts PDF submissions)
3. Vecteezy (No attribution stock images)
4. Book Bolt (keywords + page templates + research tools)
5. Creative Fabrica (Stock images)
6. YouTubers: Paul Marles + Barbara Everett + Kat Theo

While many people might say it’s super easy, you will need some assistance when you first start off, and the best place to look is YouTube and blogs. There are many people out there who will offer free page templates, keyword assistance and give you general information about the KDP platform. 

The best tip is to do your research and do not just research with a bias gaze. Look for videos, articles, or blogs that also talk about the drawbacks to KDP. This area is a bit oversaturated with sellers, and you have to believe that you will stick with it and create content that is uniquely you. Just pumping out books with the same interior layout and different covers will not work, so think of an area that you find joy in and work on it. For me I plan on doing two adult coloring book, one on places I have visted and the second about tropical fruits.
